How do I pay the dentist?

Please check with your insurer if (part of) the dental treatment is reimbursed. For Dutch children up to the age of 18 the dental treatment is reimbursed by the health insurer. After your treatment you normally have to pay your dentist directly. If you prefer to receive an invoice you need to agree this upfront with the dentist.

What does a visit to the dentist cost?

The maximum tariffs are the same for each dentist and are fixed each year by the Dutch Healthcare Authority(https://www.nza.nl/1048076/1048144/TB_CU_7135_04__Tariefbeschikking_tandheelkundige_zorg.pdf). This does not mean that each dentist charges the same for each treatment. Each part of a treatment has its own code. The tariffs have been fixed for each part / code. It may however be the case that a dentist decides to use more parts for a treatment then another dentist. The dentist may for example take an extra radiography or consultation. Because of this there can be differences in the overall cost of a treatment between different dentists.

For a simple consultation and small radiography you pay €20.08 + €14.80 = €34.88.

For treatments above €250 dentists are obliged to first provide you with a cost proposal. If you find the proposal too high or think you do not need all the parts, you can always ask another dentist for a competing proposal in order to compare. If you have a dental insurance, please check with your health insurer what parts are reimbursed.
